Figure 9.1 Sixteen-year-old Edward Burgess Peirce, who enlisted as a drummer in Company F of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment, later wrote home, “I have left off drumming and taken a musket. I shall get three dollars more a month and I like it first rate so far.” The line between Civil War drummers and soldiers could be very fluid; while some youths like Peirce officially “joined the ranks,” others simply acted as soldiers in the heat of the moment.
